Evaluation of Text Adaptation Processes and Adapted Texts in Authoring and Writing Skills Course

This study aims to examine the text adaptation levels of 7th grade middle school students in the Authoring and Writing Skills course and to collect students' views on text adaptation processes. This study was conducted with 60 students enrolled in a public school in Gazipaşa district of Antalya province during the 2023-2024 academic year. Adopting a qualitative case study design, the implementation began in the week when the topic “Identifying the Stages of Writing in the Text Production Process” was covered and continued for eight weeks. At the beginning of the activities, pre-determined scales were administered. Memduh Şevket Esendal's short story “Karga Yavrusu” was shared with the students, and the text was analyzed in detail. In line with expert opinions, the text “Karga Yavrusu” was selected as the source text for text adaptation applications. At the beginning and end of the process, students were asked to adapt the story into a theatrical script, and the resulting adaptations were evaluated using a graded scoring key. Additionally, students' opinions on the text adaptation process were collected and interpreted. During the evaluation of the text adaptation activities, it was observed that students received low scores on the forms they filled out before the activities, but their scores increased significantly after the activities were completed. In other words, at the end of the activities, a notable improvement was observed in the application forms of the students after the initial low scores. This result revealed that text adaptation activities had a direct effect on improving students' writing skills. Furthermore, in the evaluations where the students' views on the process were collected, it was understood that text adaptation activities were considered an educational and positive experience.
